New Citizen Excited for Civic Engagement

Magnolia decided to come to this country from Mexico at an early age to have better opportunities for herself and to be able to help her family. Like many immigrants, she left the only place and people she loved to start over. One of the hardest but most transformative aspects of leaving her small town was the cultural assimilation she experienced in bustling San Diego. Her first and only job in this country has been working for one San Diego family, who have always motivated her and helped her plan for her future.

Magnolia learned quickly that perseverance, hard work and knowledge would be key to improving her life. She is a mother of three adult children; her two sons have graduated from college, and her daughter will graduate soon. Magnolia is married, and is very satisfied with the life she has created for herself and children. She is proud to say that after 28 years, she is no longer just an immigrant but a citizen of this country. When she received her citizenship certificate this past week, she realized that even something as simple as crossing the border would be different. As a citizen, she would no longer have to show her permanent resident card, but only her American passport. Magnolia registered to vote the same day she took her oath. She does not want to lose any time getting involved, and wants to exercise every responsibility she has now as a citizen.

Magnolia is intrigued by the laws, regulations and order of this country. She explained that "even though I was not born here, I have the opportunity to become a citizen of this country. All I had to do was follow the rules and do the right thing. Si, Se Puede!" (Yes, you can!). Magnolia is very grateful to NCICC for helping her prepare for the naturalization exam. Of her next plans for life, she laughed and said "I must remember that perseverance will help me through my next dream to become a businesswoman."

Magnolia, a una edad temprana en su vida, decidió venir a este país desde México para tener mejores oportunidades para ella y poder ayudar a su familia. Como muchos inmigrantes, ella dejó el único lugar, las personas a quienes amaba para comenzar de nuevo. Una de las partes más difíciles pero beneficiosas de abandonar su país y su pequeña ciudad fue la asimilación cultural que tuvo que atravesar. Su primer y único trabajo en este país ha sido trabajar para una sola  familia aqui en San Diego. Siempre la han motivado, guiado y ayudado a mejorar su vida. Esa asimilación que fue un desafío para ella es lo que le ha ayudado en su vida en los Estados Unidos. Aprendió rápidamente que la perseverancia, el trabajo duro y el conocimiento serían la clave para mejorar su vida. Ella es madre de tres hijos adultos, sus dos hijos mayores se han graduado de la universidad y su hija se graduará próximamente. Magnolia está casada y está muy satisfecha con la vida que ella ha creado para su familia. Se enorgullece de decir que durante los últimos 28 años, ha sido parte de esta sociedad, pero saber que ya no es solo una inmigrante sino una ciudadana estadounidense, llena su corazón de alegría. Cuando recibió su certificado de ciudadanía la semana pasada, se dio cuenta de que algo tan simple como cruzar la frontera sería diferente, ya no tendría que mostrar su tarjeta de residente permanente, sino su pasaporte Americano. Magnolia se registró para votar el mismo día que hizo su juramento. Ella no quiere perder tiempo y quiere participar en todas las responsabilidades que tiene ahora como ciudadana. Convertirse en ciudadana estadounidense le dará la oportunidad y el derecho de elegir, de marcar la diferencia y de votar. Magnolia está intrigada por las leyes, regulaciones y orden de este país. Ella dijo:"aunque no nací aquí, tengo la oportunidad de convertirme en ciudadana de este país. Todo lo que tenía que hacer era seguir las reglas y hacer lo 

correcto. "¡Si, Se Puede!". Magnolia está muy agradecida con NCICC por ayudarla a prepararse para el examen de naturalización. Ella quiere algún día convertirse en dueña de un negocio. Ella sonrió y dijo una vez más debo recordar que la perseverancia me ayudará a cumplir mi próximo sueño de convertirme en una mujer de negocios. Sabemos que ella hará realidad ese sueño.
