Suzanne Davies was reading the Del Mar Times in early 2022 when she came across a story that mentioned Pathways to Citizenship. The mission of Pathways immediately resonated with her, since Suzanne walked alongside her husband on his journey to citizenship more than twenty years ago. She remembers the process very clearly - the legal paperwork, the visas, the test, and all of the preparation and anticipation in between.
Motivated by a lifelong love for civics, Suzanne is passionate about helping others better understand how American government functions. As a volunteer tutor, she helps students learn and remember information that they will encounter in the U.S. Naturalization Test. Going beyond basic preparation, Suzanne teaches with the intention “to foster enthusiasm and appreciation for government.” Suzanne's approach to teaching is friendly and accessible, and she makes an effort to tailor her instruction style to the needs of each student. Having lived and worked in Washington D.C. and Boston, Suzanne is the go-to resource for students’ more complex questions about American government, history, and culture.
At Pathways' citizenship preparation classes, Suzanne says, “everyone seems to genuinely care for each other—students and volunteers.” She appreciates the students’ hard work and the volunteer tutors' ability to create a “caring, comfortable environment.”
If you're considering volunteering with Pathways, Suzanne says “just jump in!” She adds, “Everyone has something to offer. You will learn as much from the students as they learn from you.”
